Imo State Police command has confirmed one dead and five others injured following an improvised Explosive Device detonated at Eke Ubaheze Market square, Awo-Idemili in Orsu local government area of Imo State.
In a statement by the police public relations officer Henry Okoye, Preliminary investigation revealed that the explosive was allegedly planted by members of the proscribed indigenous people of Biafra.
According to the police, a middle aged woman from Ubaheze village stepped on the landmine which exploded and critically injured her and was later confirmed dead at the hospital, while five others sustained varying degrees of injuries and are receiving medical attention.
Okoye noted that the police authority in the state has deployed operatives of the command’s Explosive ordnance disposal unit, tactical team and personnel from Orsu and Orlu Divisions to cordon off the area, evacuate victims and sweep the market vicinity for any other planted IEDs.
He said that the commissioner of police Aboki Danjuma has directed the deputy commissioner of police in charge of the State criminal investigation department to commence a comprehensive investigation aimed at unmasking and apprehending the perpetrators.
The Commissioner of police also commiserates with the family of the deceased and wished the injured quick recovery.
