Obichukwu who hailed from Ezeagu Local Government area in Enugu State has been diagnosed of End StageRenal Disease, ESRD, and he needs an urgent kidney transplantation to stay alive.
In a medical report signed by a Consultant Nephrologist at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, Dr. T.I. Umeizudike showed that Joseph has managed hypertension for two years and diabetes mellitus for 13 years. According to the report, “He was recently admitted on account of vomiting, poor appetite, hiccups and difficulty to walk.
His serum creatinine and blood urea were 10.3 mg/dI and 154 mg/dI respectively. A diagnosis of hypertensive heart disease with chronic kidney disease stage 5 was made based on clinical and biochemical findings. The report further stated that he is currently on weekly hemodialysis and needed urgent kidney transplantation as a definitive treatment for his illness at the cost of N8 million. Narrating her husband’s ordeal, Mrs. Mary Nnagbogu said it began like malaria and typhoid in 2004 but after series of lab tests they found out that he has developed diabetes and was placed on treatment.
“But in 2015, the sickness brought him down completely to the extent that he was unable to walk and couldn’t recognise people around him. So he was quickly rushed to the hospital where they detected that he has tuberculosis and was placed on six months treatment.” Mary said that her husband was discharged after the treatment and they went back home, “during his routine visit to hospital they told him to see a nephrologist for further diagnosis.
It was at this point we were told he has kidney problem.” Nnagbogu was later placed on medication and he complied with the recommendation. Unforttunately, early 2017 he began to vomit continuously and lost appetite for food. “So we went back to the hospital where they told us that his kidney was no longer functioning.
“The doctor placed him on dialysis but recently the doctor told us that the best thing is to change the kidney and presently we have seen a donor but we do not have money for the transplant which doctors at LASUTH, estimated to cost N8 million,” Mary said amidst tears. Mary who burstted into tears appealed to good spirited Nigerians, the Enugu State Governor, Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and cooperate organizations to help save her husband. “Please don’t let me turn to widow, our children is still small and the responsibility is beyond my power.”
