The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Seme Area Command, has dismissed as false and baseless a viral report alleging that it seized and distributed bags of rice without the owner’s knowledge, leading to deaths — including that of a soldier — supposedly caused by a traditional curse.
In a statement released by the Command, the allegations were described as “entirely false, misleading, and unreflective of reality.”
The NCS emphasised that all seized goods are handled in strict compliance with its Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), which prioritise transparency, due process, and adherence to existing laws.
The Command further clarified that no such incident — involving deaths from rice consumption or any related case — occurred within its Area of Responsibility (AoR).
It also condemned those spreading the false narrative, particularly individuals disguising as journalists, accusing them of using their platforms to misinform the public rather than uphold their professional responsibility.
“We urge the public to disregard this unfounded story and avoid spreading misinformation capable of inciting fear or damaging the reputation of security agencies dedicated to protecting the country,” the statement read.
Under the leadership of Comptroller Ben Oramalugo, the Seme Area Command reaffirmed its commitment to revenue generation, the suppression of smuggling, and the facilitation of lawful trade — all carried out with professionalism and respect for Nigeria’s fiscal policies and regulations.
