Nigeria, China sign letter of intent to improve health sector

Nigeria and the People’s Republic of China have signed a letter of intent to improve the health sector of both countries, as well as share knowledge and skills.

The letter was signed by Nigeria’s Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire and Cui Jianchun, Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria in Abuja.

Cui stated that the project was one of nine initiatives launched by Chinese President Xi Jinping during the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC8th )’s Ministerial Conference on Public Hygiene and Public Health.

Nigeria, China sign letter of intent to improve health sector

Over the years, Nigeria and China have shared bilateral cooperation in economic and infrastructural development.

This cooperation is now being strengthened especially in the health sector.

This close cooperation according to Nigeria’s Minister of health, Ehanire, is a good opportunity for transfer of knowledge as it will help in research and development.

The pioneer project under the signed letter of intent will be implemented by the People’s University Hospital in Beijing and the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital.

The letter of Intent enables both countries to discuss modalities and the extent of the engagement before an agreement is reached

The Chinese Ambassador also said, under its goals and support for Nigeria, the People’s Republic of China plans to help build dams that can meet the needs of farmers and herders, thereby resolving the constant conflict between herders and farmers in Nigeria.

Prof. Bissallah Ekele, the Chief Medical Director, University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, who was also present at the signing said that the initiative was apt, assuring that the teaching hospital will effectively harness all the opportunities it comes with.

According to Cul, “Nigeria and China, have huge population that needs public health and the agreement will in the long run benefit both countries.
