The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has praised the management of Delta State University, Abraka, for introducing a student-friendly directive that allows beneficiaries of the NELFUND loan scheme to participate in the first semester 2025/2026 examinations.
The directive, conveyed through an internal memorandum from the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), permits students whose application status on the NELFUND portal is marked as “Verified” or “Disbursed” to sit for their examinations upon presenting proof of their status on the platform.
Reacting to the development, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of NELFUND, Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, commended the university for demonstrating strong institutional support for Nigerian students.
According to him, the initiative reflects a clear understanding of the core objective of the NELFUND scheme, which is to ensure that financial limitations do not prevent Nigerian students from accessing higher education.
He noted that the Fund welcomes practical and youth-focused measures by institutions that enable students who have successfully completed the loan application process to continue their academic activities without interruption.
Sawyerr further stated that such actions strengthen the broader goal of the NELFUND programme to widen access to tertiary education while promoting fairness and inclusivity across Nigeria’s higher institutions.
NELFUND therefore encouraged other universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education to adopt similar supportive policies that prioritise students’ academic progress while the loan processing continues to provide the necessary financial support for tuition and upkeep.
The Fund reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating closely with tertiary institutions nationwide to ensure the effective implementation of the student loan programme and to protect the educational aspirations of Nigerian students.
