The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has responded to concerns raised by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu over alleged gaps in pilot training, crew conduct, and regulatory oversight.
In a statement signed by its Director-General, Captain Chris Najomo, the Authority said it operates a globally recognised system that ensures the medical and professional competence of all licensed pilots in Nigeria.
According to the NCAA, every pilot is required to hold a valid licence and undergo a comprehensive aeromedical examination before certification. The Authority also maintains strict rules prohibiting alcohol or psychoactive substances within eight hours of duty, alongside regular inspections across airports to uphold safety standards.
Captain Najomo highlighted disciplinary measures taken against erring crew, including the suspension of a ValueJet pilot who operated a flight without proper clearance.
On the Senator’s remarks that modern aircraft take off and land automatically, the NCAA clarified that while today’s planes are equipped with advanced autopilot systems, they do not replace pilot control.

TVC previously reported that Se.nator Orji Kalu, the lawmaker representing Abia North Senatorial District, has raised serious concerns over the pilot fitness check by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority during a plenary session on the floor of the national assembly on Thursday.
The Senator stated that some of the pilots indulge in the smoking of indian hemp and all sorts of drug use before flights, an action he claimed has prevented him from getting on board on several occasions.
