Argentina captain Lionel Messi described his side’s dramatic 2-1 victory over England in the FIFA World Cup semi-final as “special” after inspiring the reigning champions to another remarkable comeback.

According to AFP, Argentina came from behind to secure their place in the World Cup final after Anthony Gordon fired England into the lead before late goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez turned the match around in Atlanta.

The 39-year-old Messi played a decisive role in the victory, providing the assist for Fernandez’s 85th-minute equaliser before delivering the cross that Martinez headed home for the winner.

Reflecting on the result, Messi said the triumph carried added significance because of the long-standing rivalry between the two nations.

“What the group has been doing is incredible, and this, of course, is again something that shows our character, our grit, our collective, the way that we play together,” said Messi.

“It was really, truly amazing.”

The forward said he was looking forward to facing Spain in the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday, where he will face the country where he spent most of his career, at Barcelona.

He said Spain, who beat France 2-0 to reach the final, were “a fantastic side, wonderful players”.

“They play very, very well. I know them quite well. Their whole idea and philosophy has been very well (developed) throughout this time, and I know the players as well.”
