Human Rights activist and Lawyer, Dr Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, has backed the decision by the Lagos State government to let the State Attorney General, Moyosore Onigbanjo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria to lead the prosecution team for the trial of an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Drambi Vandi, for the the Christmas day killing of Lagos property Lawyer, Omobolanle Raheem, in the Ajah area of the State.

She added that the move shows the seriousness with which the Lagos State Government is taking the issue.

Dr Akiyode-Afolabi, who was s[peaking with TVC News Nifemi Oguntoye, on the This Morning programme said the main concern of most Nigerians on issues like this is the way and manner the culprits seem to always melt away.

She added that she will also personally be on the lookout for the trial and will take a watching brief on the progress of the prosecution.

She pointed out the main reason why Nigerians have never had hope or believe in the Judiciary as the long time it takes to get through a case or even when they are not even prosecuted like the Apo 6 killing and a whole lot of Others that led to the #ENDSARS protests that grounded the nation.

On her experience of human rights abuse cases involving the Nigerian Police, She said the Police have never given hope that things can change and in some cases even refuse to appear in such cases giving example of a case involving human rights abuse involving the Police she has handled since 2013.

Going further, she said the primary duty of the Police is to protect Lives and Property and not take it as was the case with Omobolanle Raheem.

She said the killing was a violation of her rights to family life wondering why a senior Police officer can as drunk as the culprit was reported to have been.

She called for drastic action to be taken to ensure that this kind of incident does not repeat itself.

On if the involvement of the Attorney General of Lagos State in the matter will help in expediting the trial, She said the issue has never been expediting a case or not but the lack of Political will on the part of the authorities.
