The Lagos State Government has announced plans to roll out the second phase of its ‘Ounje Eko’ Farmers’ Subsidy Programme before the end of November, aiming to provide farmers with access to quality feed and boost agricultural production across the state.

The announcement was made by Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Abisola Olusanya, at a press briefing in Alausa, Ikeja.

She described the programme as a key initiative of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration to sustain food production, empower farmers, and stabilise food prices, particularly during the yuletide season.

Olusanya noted that the first phase of the subsidy programme, launched earlier this year, yielded significant results, benefiting over 5,000 farmers directly.

The intervention saw the distribution of more than 993 metric tons of poultry feed and 265 metric tons of fish feed, supporting the production of 258,000-layer birds—yielding over seven million eggs, and 177,100 catfish. Egg prices, she said, fell from ₦6,000 per crate to between ₦5,000 and ₦5,400.

Building on this success, Governor Sanwo-Olu approved the implementation of Phase II, which will expand the programme’s scope and reach.

The second phase will offer a 25% subsidy on poultry feed (layer mash, broiler starter, and finisher) and fish feed, alongside free distribution of grains to pig farmers to support livestock nutrition. Additionally, agricultural equipment and inputs will be provided to crop farming clusters to enhance mechanisation and reduce manual labour.

The programme will operate across ten locations in the state, including Farm Service Centre, Agege; Agricultural Training Institute, Araga; Epe Coconut House, Mowo; Badagry Fish Farm Estate, Odongunyan, Ikorodu; Erikorodo Poultry Estate, Ikorodu; Aiyedoto Poultry Estate, Ojo; Ministry of Agriculture Cooperative Office, Ajah; and the Armed Forces Resettlement Centre.

Participation, Olusanya said, will be limited to recognised and registered farmer associations, such as the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN-LAG), Lagos State Catfish Allied Farmers Association of Nigeria (LASCAFAN), and Farm Estate and Settlement Associations, to ensure transparency and accountability.

Farmers are encouraged to register with the relevant associations to take advantage of the support.
