The Lagos State Government has started a large-scale demolition exercise at the New Mandela Plaza, within the Trade Fair Complex, dismantling at least 19 buildings said to have been erected without approval or on restricted areas.
Officials from multiple agencies – including the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA), Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA) and the Office of Infrastructure – conducted the operation, supported by armed security personnel.
Honourable members of the Lagos State House of Assembly were also present.
The authorities said the exercise targeted illegal developments, defective structures and buildings constructed on road setbacks and drainage channels.
However, affected traders expressed anger and frustration over the demolition. One trader claimed the buildings were worth more than ₦150 million each, adding that the livelihoods of several businesses had been destroyed.
“If government doesn’t want companies or development here, they should just come out and say it. People have invested their life savings here. Over 19 buildings are in that plaza,” the trader said.
The state government has yet to issue a full statement on compensation or future plans for the area as the demolition continues.
