The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed deep concern over what it describes as the “deteriorating state” of opposition parties in Nigeria as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 21, APC spokesman Hon. Seye Oladejo criticised opposition parties for failing to serve as credible checks on the government, accusing them instead of being “a coalition of desperation, confusion, and hypocrisy” that threatens Nigeria’s democratic growth.

“The health of any democracy is measured by the quality, depth, and seriousness of its opposition,” Oladejo said, noting that Nigeria’s opposition has “failed woefully” due to a lack of leadership, cohesion, and a binding political philosophy. He added that politicians who once claimed ideological principles now switch platforms in pursuit of personal relevance, leaving the opposition “united only by their lust for power.”

The Lagos APC contrasted this with the era of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose opposition politics were marked by strategic coalition-building, ideological clarity, and disciplined engagement.

“It was that brand of purposeful and issue-driven opposition that gave birth to the APC — a product of strategic coalition, political discipline, and intellectual depth — which Nigerians overwhelmingly voted into power in 2015,” the statement said.

According to the party, while President Tinubu’s administration implements the Renewed Hope Agenda—pursuing economic reforms, national stability, and citizen empowerment—the opposition remains preoccupied with “propaganda, bitterness, and blind ambition.”

Oladejo criticised opposition parties for failing to present “any coherent roadmap for the economy, security, education, or social development,” arguing that their approach reduces public discourse to “noise and confusion” and contributes to growing voter apathy.

The statement called on Nigerians to “see through the facade of this rudderless opposition,” asserting that the 2027 elections will be “a referendum on performance, vision, and national stability,” with the APC positioned as the leading party in all three areas.

Oladejo concluded by emphasising the party’s commitment to “building a prosperous, secure, and inclusive nation under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu” and urged the opposition to embrace leadership, discipline, and sincerity if it genuinely seeks to contribute to Nigeria’s democratic progress.
