Kwara Speakership tussle: Three APC members sue Clerk over house rule

Image result for Saheed PopoolaThree members of the All Progressives Congress in Kwara state have sued the clerk of the Kwara state house of assembly over the rules of the house on the election of the speaker of the 9th assembly.

They want the clerk to follow the rule of the house mandating the clerk to swear in the most experienced member as the speaker.

Correspondent Ibrahim Alege  reports that the three members of the All Progressives Congress instituted the suit to pave way for the member representing Ojomu Balogun state constituency, Saheed Popoola to become the next speaker of the Kwara state house of
assembly.

He is the only returning member from the 8th assembly and incidentally the most experienced but zoning of the three major positions may be a major stumbling block to him.

The governor-elect is from Kwara Central, the deputy governor-elect is from Kwara south where Saheed Popoola hails from while Kwara north covets the speakership position. But the plaintiffs say experience and party loyalty should count.

Although the party is yet to come out openly on its stand on the Speakership position, the plaintiffs suspect that the party may favour
Kwara north to produce the next speaker, hence they want the party to stay off the internal affairs of the legislature.

The debate on whether the election of the new speaker should be based on experience and party loyalty or geopolitical consideration has dominated discussion within Kwara political terrain.
