A group of mining professionals in Jos, the Plateau state capital, is calling on the police authorities to intervene in the illegal arrest and intimidation of two of their members by some police personnel believed to be hired by some foreign expatriates.

They alleged that a court had earlier ordered the release of the two men, but the police have refused to heed the order and have given no reason for their action.

At a press briefing by the legal advisory group Elipse, following what they allege was the illegal arrest of two of their members by some operatives of the police, believed to have come from the federal capital territory.

The group recently had a disagreement with their foreign partners over an interest, and they are sure that the arrest of their members is connected to the situation.

Counsel to the victims say they remain in pplice detention even after being granted bail by a court of competent jurisdiction in clear disregard of their fundamental human rights under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

They are calling on the IGP and human rights organizations to intervene, as they view the act as illegal in nature.

It is hoped that the police authorities will investigate this matter and bring the situation to a logical conclusion.
