The Jigawa State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 27-year-old man identified as Kabiru Nuhu, who allegedly set his 60-year-old father ablaze in Kazaure Local Government Area.

In a Sunday statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Jigawa State Command, Shi’isu Adam, the suspect poured a reasonable quantity of a flammable item, suspected to be petrol, on his father and set him ablaze.

According to the statement, the command received the tragic report from Lokon Malamai, via Magama Quarters in Kazaure town, that a 60-year-old was engulfed by fire, suspiciously ignited by an unknown person, which investigation revealed the suspect to be the biological son.

The incident was reported in the early hours of Wednesday at about 06:30 a.m.

The statement reads, “On receipt of the report, the team of policemen responded promptly, and the victim was rushed to the nearest hospital.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that, on the same date at about 0600hrs, an unidentified person poured a reasonable quantity of a flammable item, suspected to be petrol, on the victim’s body and set him ablaze.”

The statement added, “In-depth surveillance and investigation led to the arrest of one Kabiru Nuhu ‘m ‘ age 27 years of the same address, who happened to be the biological son of the victim with several fresh fire burns and wounds on his forehead, arms, and toes.

“The victim was later referred to the higher medical centre for intensive treatment, but sadly succumbed to the injuries sustained while receiving treatment.

“The suspect is currently in custody and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Dutse, for discreet investigation and diligent prosecution.”

The Commissioner of Police, Jigawa State Command, CP Haruna Alaba Yahaya, condemned the act, assuring the public that justice will be served, adding that further developments will be communicated in due course.

He further calls on residents to seek peaceful means of resolving disputes and to report any signs of domestic violence or conflict to the nearest police station.

The Command also urges members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with the police as investigations continue.
