The University of Ibadan Muslim Community has appointed Professor Ibrahim Olatunde Uthman FIPMD as its new Chief Imam.

The announcement was made on Sunday, October 19, 2025, during a meeting of the community’s Board of Governors at the University Central Mosque.

Professor Emeritus Musiliu Onilude, President of the community, presented the Shuurah Committee’s report on the appointment, highlighting twelve key criteria in the selection process.

These included knowledge of Islamic studies, integrity, humility, eloquence, and deep spirituality.

Professor Uthman succeeds Professor Mufutau Abdulrahman, who retires on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70.

The announcement was confirmed by Idris Olabode Badiru, Publicity Secretary of the University of Ibadan Muslim Community.

Prior to his appointment, Uthman served as Assistant Imam under Professor Abdulrahman and was the immediate past Head of the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University.

A distinguished scholar in Islamic Studies, Professor Uthman earned his PhD in Usul al-Din and Comparative Religion from the International Islamic University, Malaysia.

His research spans Islamic studies, modernism, and feminism, with published works including The Sharīʿah and Muslim Feminists’ Public Display of the Female Body, The Institution of Jihad and the Yoruba Experience, and Feminist Insiders-Outsiders: Muslim Women in Nigeria and the Contemporary Feminist Movement.

In addition to his academic contributions, Professor Uthman has taught at institutions such as the International Islamic University Malaysia and Crescent University, Abeokuta, where he was the pioneering Acting Head of the Department of Islamic Religious and General Studies.

His leadership in Islamic affairs dates back to his student days at the University of Ibadan, where he served as Student Imam and later as President of the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), UI Chapter.
