HYPPADEC provides relief materials to flood victims in Niger

The Hydro Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC) has begun the distribution of relief materials to victims of the flood in communities across the six states under the Commission.

This is coming on the heels of water released from the kainji and Jebba hydroelectric power Dams that has submerged more than 50 communities in Mokwa local government council of Niger state.

The flood victims here we displaced by the release of water downstream from the kainji and Jebba Dams.

They are mainly farmers who’s farming lands have now been submerged by water.

In order to mitigate the effects of the flooding disaster in Ketso community in Mokwa local council, the government provided a new resettlement for its inhabitants to move to a higher ground.

The land was been awarded to the people with certificates of occupancy but there are no structures and people are too poor to erect one.

They now live in this primary school pending when the water will recede before they return to the low lands where they live.

The Hydro Electric power producing Areas Development commission is here to flag off distribution of relief materials to these people.

The director of operations who is here to supervise the flag off said the commission is aware of the need to build structures for the people, and plans are on ground to do just that .

Despite the provision of the new resettlement there are people still living in the flooded plains because they cannot afford a boat fare to come to higher grounds.
