The Government of Ghana has criticised the United States over its military action in Venezuela, describing the move as a violation of international law and global norms.

Reports from Venezuela indicate that multiple explosions rocked Caracas in the early hours of Saturday, leading to widespread power outages across parts of the capital. The development triggered uncertainty and heightened tension within the country.

Later on Saturday, US President Donald Trump announced that American forces had entered Venezuela and taken into custody President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, confirming what he described as a successful military operation.

In an official statement released on Sunday, the Ghanaian government condemned the action, characterising it as an unauthorised and unilateral invasion that contravenes the United Nations Charter and infringes on Venezuela’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Ghana warned that such actions threaten the political independence of states and pose serious risks to international peace and stability.

The statement noted that external military intervention and attempts to control another country’s resources have far-reaching consequences for the global order.

“The Ghanaian Government is keenly following the situation in Venezuela with great concern, and notes that such assaults on international law, attempts at the occupation of foreign territories and apparent external control of oil resources have extremely adverse implications on international stability and the global order,” the statement said.

The government also expressed unease over remarks attributed to President Trump suggesting that the United States would administer Venezuela until a transition deemed acceptable was achieved.

According to Ghana, such comments echo historical experiences of colonialism and imperialism and undermine the foundations of the post-Second World War international system.

Ghana stressed that allowing such precedents would endanger the sovereignty of nations worldwide, insisting that Venezuela’s political future should be determined solely by its people through democratic means.

The statement called for an immediate reduction of tensions and demanded the release of President Maduro and his wife.

Reaffirming its foreign policy stance, Ghana reiterated its opposition to invasion, occupation, colonialism, apartheid and all violations of international law, pledging to continue advocating for these principles in its international engagements.
