Ghana have appointed veteran Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz as head coach ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Ghana Football Association has announced.

The 73-year-old, whose managerial journey has spanned multiple continents and includes spells at Real Madrid and two separate stints as assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, will now lead the Black Stars into what will be his fourth appearance at the global showpiece.

Queiroz succeeds Otto Addo, who was relieved of his duties two weeks ago, shortly after Ghana suffered a 2-1 defeat to Germany in a friendly encounter.

In a statement confirming his immediate assumption of duty, the Ghana Football Association said: “Coach Queiroz begins work immediately in order to prepare the Black Stars for the tournament, which kicks off on June 11.”

However, no details were provided regarding the duration of his contract beyond the competition.

The appointment marks Queiroz’s ninth national team assignment, further extending a career defined by extensive international experience. He has previously guided Portugal to the 2010 FIFA World Cup and led Iran to the 2018 and 2022 editions.

His coaching résumé also includes spells with the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Colombia, Egypt, Qatar and Oman, underscoring his reputation as one of football’s most travelled national team managers.

Ghana will compete in Group L at the 2026 FIFA World Cup 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they are drawn alongside England, Croatia and Panama in a tournament jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
