The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Jigawa State Command, has joined the global community in commemorating the 8th United Nations World Bicycle Day, with a renewed call for safer roads and responsible road use.
The Sector Commander of the FRSC in Jigawa State, Umar Masa’udu Matazu, made the call during activities marking the day in Dutse, the state capital.
Speaking on the theme, “Boosting Urban Life with Bicycles,” Matazu described cycling as more than a recreational activity, saying it plays a vital role in transportation, public health, and environmental sustainability.

He urged motorists, cyclists, and other road users to respect one another and promote safer road practices, including the use of helmets, reflective materials, and proper visibility while riding.
“Cycling is not just a sport; it is transportation, health, and environmental protection combined. A greener future begins with safer roads for everyone,” he said.
The Sector Commander noted that bicycles remain one of the most affordable, reliable, and environmentally friendly means of transportation, especially in growing urban communities.
As part of the celebration, the command organized a public awareness rally, safety lectures for cycling groups, and the distribution of reflective stickers to cyclists across major towns in the state.
World Bicycle Day was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2017, with the first global observance held in 2018.

The annual event promotes cycling as a simple, clean, and sustainable mode of transport that contributes to healthier lifestyles and reduced environmental pollution.
The FRSC says encouraging safe cycling and responsible road use will not only reduce crashes but also support Nigeria’s efforts toward healthier communities, cleaner cities, and sustainable development.
