The Federal Government has inaugurated the recently constituted governing councils for federal tertiary institutions in the country.
The Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, urged the council members to abide by the existing laws guiding the institutions to ensure a good management of their institutions.
In May 2024, President Tinubu ordered a review of the list of the chairpersons and members of the governing councils of Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
The directive came after some Nigerians accused the Minister of Education, that the list does not reflect federal character.
After several weeks, the list was reconstituted and today they are being inaugurated.
While inaugurating the councils, the minister of Education advised that the councils should address the numerous challenges facing the tertiary institutions ranging from proliferation of illegal institutions, gender imbalance, certificate racketeering, among others.
Responding on behalf of the Governing councils, the Pro-Chancellor, University of Lagos, appealed to the federal government to help universities to be more productive.
A total of 560 people were appointed to the governing councils and boards of federal universities, federal polytechnics and federal colleges of education.
