Former Group CEO of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, has dismissed claims of his arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), describing the reports as false and misleading.
In a statement on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Kyari clarified that he is currently on a “well-deserved rest” following the dissolution of NNPCL’s management and board. He labelled the arrest rumours as “clear mischief” and an attempt to distort facts.
Key Points from Kyari’s Statement: No Arrest: Kyari confirmed he has not been detained by the EFCC or any other agency, Service Record: He highlighted his 34-year career at NNPC/NNPCL, including nearly 6 years as CEO, with little time for leave.
He stated he served “with the fear of God” and remains open to lawful scrutiny, Warning Against Fake News, Kyari urged media outlets to verify stories before publishing, as false reports could harm Nigeria’s reputation and investor confidence.
The denial comes amid heightened scrutiny of former public officials under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Kyari served under both Muhammadu Buhari and Tinubu before the NNPCL board was dissolved in June 2024.
False arrest reports could damage Kyari’s reputation and create unnecessary panic.
Unverified claims also risk eroding trust in Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts and deterring investors.
Kyari thanked supporters who reached out and reiterated his availability for lawful inquiries.
No official EFCC statement has been released on the matter. Authorities are yet to confirm or deny any investigation.
