The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arraigned former CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele on fresh 8-count charges of alleged money laundering totalling N7.7 billion and the ownership of a 150-square-meter Estate in Lokogoma, Abuja.
Mr Emefiele who appeared before Justice Yusuf Halilu of the FCT High Court in Maitama pleaded not guilty to the charges.
In the charge, Mr Emefiele is accused of allegedly unlawfully obtaining the said Estate as well as between 2019 and 2022 having under his control the accumulated sum of N7 billion.
Counsel to the prosecution Rotimi Oyedepo prayed the court to grant accelerated hearing in the matter and remand the defendant in custody.
Counsel to Mr Emefiele informed the court of pending cases filed by the prosecution which is 3 in number and this fresh charge makes it four.
He noted that the defendant is currently on bail granted to him by the other courts.
A bail application was filed by the defendant’s counsel and he prayed the court to admit his client to the same.
In response the prosecution noted that he was just served with the application for bail and will need time to respond.
