The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has paid tribute to veteran journalist and co-founder of Newswatch magazine, Dan Agbese, describing him as a “titan of truth” whose passing marks a profound loss to Nigeria’s media landscape.

In a statement on Tuesday, Idris said Agbese was a foundational figure in contemporary Nigerian journalism, celebrated for his courage, integrity and unwavering defence of press freedom.

“Agbese was a titan of truth whose legacy formed the foundation of enlightened public discourse by co-founding the trailblazing Newswatch magazine, which became a defining institution in our national life,” the Minister said.

He noted that through his famous No Holds Barred column and decades of fearless commentary, Agbese consistently held leaders accountable while contributing significantly to national development.

Idris added that Agbese’s death comes at a time when the Tinubu administration is committed to strengthening the values the late journalist championed—democratic expansion, free speech and inclusive civic engagement.

“I mourn him not only with grief, but with deep gratitude for a legacy that has indelibly shaped our nation’s discourse,” he said.

The Minister extended condolences to Agbese’s family, colleagues and the wider media community, describing the late editor as a giant whose contributions will continue to inspire future generations.

“May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Idris added.
