Cyclone Idai has killed at least 157 across Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

Mozambique President, Filipe Nyusi described the situation in his country as a real humanitarian disaster of large proportions.

After a flight over affected areas, president Nyusi said the number of people killed in the powerful storm and preceding floods in Mozambique could exceed 1,000.

The cyclone not only killed but also destroyed roads, disrupted communications and flooded lands.

President Nyusi, has been visiting the flooded city of Beira, home to the country’s second-largest port.

Speaking to reporters as he visited flooded city, President Nyusi said rescue equipment, volunteers and doctors have been deployed to the affected places.

“We have put rescue means in place and we asked our friends for more. We have rescue equipment, volunteers and doctors arriving now in Maputo. Answering to the questions on why are foreigners coming here, it’s because they know how to deal with these situations and they are not charging us for their support.” he said
