Justice Okon Abang of the Federal high court in Abuja has dismissed the fundamental human rights’ enforcement suit filed by Senate president, Bukola Saraki against the Inspector General of Police.
Two other senators, Ben Murray-Bruce and Dino Melaye also joined the senate president in the case.
They had alleged that their rights were violated by the Nigeria police, following a protest they staged in October last year, alongside other leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party at INEC’s National Headquarters in Abuja.
The three applicants stated the police invited them for questioning, a day after they embarked on a protest, demanding free and fair elections in two thousand and nineteen.
Instead of complying with the police invitation, they jointly filed an application in court , seeking an order of the court directing the police to pay the sum of N500m (Five hundred million naira), as exemplary damages arising from the humiliation, intimidation, harassment and unlawful attempt to arrest them.
But today, Judge Abang dismissed the application, saying the applicants should have filed separate applications. The judge also said police invitation letter remains valid.
