Career Advisers Call For Overhaul Of Curriculum Of Institutions

As policy makers strategize to reduce the rate of unemployment, Career Life Nigeria is calling for an overhaul of the academic curriculum of tertiary institutions.

The support group made the recommendation during a training in Port Harcourt involving different professional levels and stakeholders of the Labour market.

Nigeria’s unemployment rate recently became a subject of controversy when the National Bureau of Statistics faced accusation of reducing it

from 33% to 4.1% for the first quarter of 2023.

But whether it is in single or double digits, the numbers still mean

that millions of Nigerians are not gainfully employed.

Added to that report, is the information that unemployment occurs more among those with higher educational qualifications.

As Nigerians pursue academic degrees, career life Nigeria is asking ‘how many job seekers are actually fit for employment’?

The group is hoping to help these participants break the stereotype of what it takes to land their dream jobs.

The program featured a session on writing a curriculum vitae and a mock interview to prepare participants for face to face meetings with

prospective employers.

Many of them came in here with technical abilities, but say they are

leaving with the communication skills needed to take their careers to

the next level.

The organizers say this training would be followed by a 3-month post

coaching program during which they hope majority of the participants would have secured the jobs seek.
