The Rivers State House of Assembly has voted to override Governor Siminalayi Fubara following his decision to withhold his assent to 4 controversial laws passed by the lawmakers.
At the resumed plenary, the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule confirmed receipt of letters from the Governor in which he declined accent to all 4 laws.
After that all lawmakers spoke in support of vetoing the Governor quoting section 100 subsections 3 and 5 of the 1999 Constiution.
The House of Assembly has faced criticism by some persons in the last 3 months over the laws which are seen as a deliberate attempt to whittle down the powers of the Governor.
It is the latest twist in the political crisis in the state that has seen the Governor and legislature take on each other.
The laws in question are:
1. Rivers State Funds Management and Financial Autonomy Law 2023.
2. Rivers State Local Government Amendment law 2023
3. Rivers State Advertisement and Use of State Owned Property Prohibition Repeal Law 2024
4. Traditional Rulers Amendment Law 2024
