Banning of political activities based on security reports-Zamfara govt

 

The Zamfara state government has maintained that its decision to close some media outlets, such as Federal Radio Cooperation and NTA Gusau, was in accordance with the State Executive Order No. 10 of 2022, which was signed by Governor Bello Matawalle.

The Government said activities of the affected Media Houses during last weekend rally prevented security agencies from destroying bandit camps and worsened the security situation in the state.

It also apologised to the affected media outfits, but frowned at press releases issued on the matter by some federal agencies

The clash between Supporters of the people’s Democratic Party and those of the All Progressive Congress in Zamfara last weekend led to the state government shutting down of some media Houses Including Federal Radio Cooperation and NTA Gusau

But this has continued to generate reactions from different quarters.

One person was reportedly killed, eighteen injured and Vehicles belonging to both Political parties were vandalized and set Ablaze

The Zamfara State Government says its action in banning Political activities, was based on intelligence and security reports

The Government noted that some notorious bandits had planned to launch attacks on some Communities and security agencies had put in place strategies plan to avert the attacks and crush the bandits

But the PDP rally made the implementation of these strategies impossible.

Addressing a press conference in Gusau, a chieftain of the APC Abdullahi Shinkafi said the ban on Political activities was to enable security agencies destroy notorious bandit camps not to stop any Political party from Campaigning.

He added that Governor Bello Matawalle acted within the powers of the state Executive order ten signed into law in October this year

The Government also frowned at the press releases issued by some federal government agencies on the shutdown of some media Houses for defying the the executive order ten last weekend

Though the government tendered its apology for shutting down the media houses, it said the whole situation was been politicised by some groups and individuals.

The Zamfara State Government insists no amount of pressure from within or outside the state, will prevent it from taking actions within the law to protect lives and property of it’s citizens

Abdullahi Shinkafi appealed to politicians to desist from politicising security matters in the interest of peace.
