Australian PM Scott Morrison has defended his government’s response to the bush fire crisis saying he will not make “reckless” cuts to the nation’s coal industry and setting a stricter emissions target will have no “meaningful impact” on the global climate.
Mr Morrison stated this on Monday while also reiterating he would not adjust his policies through “panic”.
Australia is being ravaged by bush fires which have killed nine people and razed hundreds of homes since September.
The nation has steadfastly backed coal-fired power for its economic value, despite the recommendations of a major report on climate change.
The coal industry employs about 38,000 people, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
