Washington hosts groundbreaking ceremony for new WWI memorial

Various dignitaries, military and Washington city officials hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the World War One Memorial in Washington, D.C.’s Pershing Park.

The groundbreaking ceremony comes just days before Veterans Day is celebrated in the United States — a day dedicated to recognizing Americans who served in the armed forces.

The memorial is expected to be completed by November 2018, which will mark 100 years since the end of that war.

Washington is home to numerous monuments and memorials dedicated to the lives lost in various conflicts around the world.

Until now, there has been no memorial dedicated exclusively to World War One.
