The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has said the ongoing nationwide e-registration of members is compulsory and not a symbolic or optional activity, describing it as a major reform aimed at strengthening internal democracy and party discipline.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the party said the digital registration programme, which commenced on Monday and will run until the end of January, is designed to provide adequate time for both existing and new members to be formally captured in a central digital database.

The party said the reform was necessary in a rapidly evolving democratic environment, warning that political parties which resist modernisation risk decline.

According to the statement, the e-registration will ensure the sanctity of the APC membership register by eliminating duplication, impersonation and unverifiable records. It added that every member of the party must be digitally recognised and accounted for.

The Lagos APC also said the exercise would provide a level playing field for all members and dismantle gate-keeping structures that seek to control access to party processes. It described the APC as an open and expanding political movement, not a closed organisation.

The party further noted that credible congresses and transparent primaries depended on a reliable membership register, insisting that the APC would not return to what it termed “politics of shadows”.

It added that the digital system would strengthen mobilisation, particularly among youths and professionals, enhance grassroots coordination, improve campaign strategy and boost electoral readiness.

The Lagos chapter expressed confidence that the initiative would ultimately reinforce the APC’s position as the country’s dominant political party, contrasting it with what it described as the “assumptions” of the opposition.

Members and stakeholders were urged to participate fully in the registration exercise, with the party stating that indifference would amount to a disservice to its ideals.

The statement concluded that the APC would continue to reform and modernise its operations despite resistance from what it called retrogressive interests.
