Manchester City midfielder Rodri is set to undergo surgery on a back injury, with no timeline yet established for his return to action.
According to The Athletic, the Spain international sustained the injury after helping his country win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he started all eight matches and was named the tournament’s Golden Ball winner.
The 30-year-old’s latest setback comes after two seasons disrupted by injuries at City.
Rodri’s long-term future at the Etihad Stadium also remains uncertain, with just one year left on his current contract. The Athletic reports that discussions over a new deal are expected following the World Cup, although the midfielder has yet to indicate a willingness to extend his stay.
The Spain captain has frequently been linked with a return to his homeland, with Real Madrid often mentioned as a possible destination. However, The Athletic reports that the Spanish giants are not planning a move for the midfielder.

Rodri has struggled to rediscover his best form since suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in September 2024, which sidelined him for most of the 2024-25 campaign.
Although he returned to action, recurring hamstring and groin problems limited him to 33 appearances across all competitions last season, including just 17 starts in the Premier League.
Before his injury troubles, Rodri was instrumental in Manchester City’s historic treble-winning campaign in 2022-23, scoring the winning goal in the UEFA Champions League final against Inter Milan while helping Pep Guardiola’s side also lift the Premier League and FA Cup.
City have since strengthened their midfield with the £116 million signing of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest. However, reports suggest Mateo Kovacic and Nico Gonzalez could leave the club, while Bernardo Silva has already departed following the expiration of his contract.
