President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mourned the passing of the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, describing him as a “man of truth” and a towering figure in Nigeria’s traditional institution.

In a statement issued on Sunday, President Tinubu reflected on the personal and national significance of Oba Adetona’s death, which occurred just hours after the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari. He said losing both men on the same day was a deeply painful experience.

“Last Sunday, within hours, I lost two men I held in the highest esteem,” the President said. “Kabiyesi was more than a royal father to me. He was a confidante, a guide, and a man of truth whose wisdom never failed.”

Tinubu praised the monarch’s 65-year reign, describing it as one marked by dignity, candour, courage, and an unwavering commitment to the people.

Speaking in Ijebu-Ode, where he attended the eighth-day Fidau prayers for the late monarch, President Tinubu said Oba Adetona’s passing had left “an enormous void” in Yorubaland and across Nigeria. He added that the Awujale’s voice, leadership, and generosity would continue to echo far beyond his kingdom.

He prayed for the late monarch, asking Almighty Allah to grant him Aljannah Firdaus and to comfort all who mourn him.

Oba Sikiru Adetona passed away on Sunday, 13 July 2025, at the age of 91, after over six decades on the throne.
