The Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation into a viral video on social media alleging that officers of the Lagos State Task Force, led by CSP Adetayo Akerele, hijacked vehicles and fabricated traffic violations to extort money from motorists.
As seen by TVC News, the video, which went viral on Saturday, captured a police officer driving a vehicle while being recorded by another individual from the back seat in the same vehicle.
The video was accompanied by a caption which reads, “Watch: Akerele’s Criminal Guise Of Task Force In Lagos: Hijack The Vehicle, Force-Drive To Position It On One-Way & Frame A Fake Evidence Against The Driver Then Work Out The Extortion. Join Us As We Are Now Determined To Mobilise & Chase Akerele & His Coterie Of Licensed Highway Robbers Outta Town.”
According to the video, the victim alleged that the task force personnel allegedly seized control of the vehicle, repositioned it illegally on a one-way street to create false evidence of a traffic offence, and then proceeded to demand payment to bail the vehicle.

In the footage, a male voice claims he was forced to pay ₦150,000 to prevent his vehicle from being impounded. He further alleged that such payments are a common occurrence, with other motorists routinely parting with similar sums to avoid the rigours of the legal system.
Reacting to the post on X, the Lagos State Police Command acknowledged the viral video, disclosing that the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has directed a full and urgent investigation into the allegations.
The statement reads, “The attention of the Lagos State Police Command has been drawn to the video currently circulating online. The Commissioner of Police has ordered an immediate investigation into the matter.
“The Command appreciates members of the public for bringing this to our attention and assures that appropriate action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation.”
