Nigerian star Victor Osimhen has been named Footballer of the Year at the 72nd Annual Milliyet Sports Awards, one of Turkey’s most prestigious sporting accolades.

The award celebrates Osimhen’s instrumental role in Galatasaray’s historic domestic double last season, where the striker’s goals and influence helped the club dominate both the league and Turkish Cup competitions.

The 72nd AXA Sigorta Milliyet Sports Awards, often considered the “Oscars of sports” in Turkey, was held on Thursday night.

Uğurcan Çakır who received the “Footballer of the Year” award on behalf of his Galatasaray teammate, said: “Osimhen is a valuable footballer, a good person. Next year, I’ll try to win this award myself.”

A delighted Osimhen, who is just recovering from his arm surgery said via a video which was played at the awards ceremony: “Thank you for the award.

“Using this opportunity, I would like to thank my club Galatasaray, my fans, my teammates, my president, and my coach. I hope to return soon. Thank you.”

The 27-year-old forward netted 26 goals and provided four assists in 30 league appearances, further adding seven goals in the UEFA Europa League and five in the Turkish Cup.

This season, Osimhen has continued his exploits, scoring 19 goals and supplying seven assists in 29 appearances across all competitions.

Osimhen’s consistency in front of goal, combined with his ability to deliver in key matches, has cemented his reputation not only in Turkey but across European football.
