Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Wednesday dismissed rumours about his death, declaring that he remains strong and healthy at 89.

Obasanjo criticised those circulating a purported letter suggesting he had spoken about his impending death, describing it as false and a waste of time.

The former president spoke in Abeokuta during a colloquium organised to mark his 89th birthday.

The event featured a lecture titled “Burden and Blessing of Leadership: Reflections from Global Africa to the World.”

Born on March 6, 1937, Obasanjo said he remained convinced that God had a purpose for preserving his life and good health at his age.

He also dismissed the claims contained in the fake letter circulating online, insisting that he was in good condition.

According to him, those behind the rumour were merely wasting their time.

The former president said he would remain alive and active for as long as his Creator desired.

He said: “I dey Kampe.”

Obasanjo added that reaching 89 years in good health reinforced his belief that God does not make mistakes in the affairs of men.

He maintained that his continued vitality was proof that his life still had meaning and purpose.

“For my final note in this address, I want to point your attention to the work of some never-do-well.

“They publish and circulate a fake paper credited to me that I am writing, giving notice of my death, pafuka.

“That is their wish and surely not God’s wish for me. God has assured me that He has more for me to do on earth, and He has given me the wherewithal to do it.

“And those who wish otherwise are going to be dealt with by God Himself. I dey kampe as usual,” the former President said.
