The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) contributes services worth more than 14 billion naira annually to Lagos State, the scheme’s Director General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has revealed.

Speaking during a courtesy visit to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at Government House, Marina, General Nafiu highlighted the significant economic value provided by over 44,000 Corps Members serving across the state.

This figure includes 333 medical doctors, 306 pharmacists, 274 nurses, and 7,188 teachers, who are deployed in various sectors supporting both government and communities.

Lagos remains the top choice for Corps Members, the DG noted, attributing its popularity to the state’s relative security and the confidence of Corps Members’ families.

The visit aimed to acknowledge the Lagos State Government’s ongoing support for the NYSC, strengthen their collaborative relationship, and assure the governor of the continued deployment of a substantial number of Corps Members to the state.

General Nafiu also praised the government for critical renovations at the temporary orientation camp in Iyana-Ipaja, while expressing optimism about the ongoing construction of the permanent orientation camp with a 10,000 capacity.

He expressed hope that once completed, Corps Members would be housed together at the new facility instead of being split among different camps.

Additionally, the NYSC Director General requested the provision of an ambulance for the Secretariat and encouraged continued government support to enhance operational effectiveness.

In a show of goodwill, General Nafiu congratulated Governor Sanwo-Olu on the recent remodeling of the National Theatre, describing it as a “national monument of repute.”
