The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has constituted a seven-member panel of medical experts to assess the health status of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

The Department of State Services (DSS) and prosecuting counsel in Kanu’s terrorism trial, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), disclosed this on Friday at the resumed hearing of the case at the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Awomolo told the court that the Federal Government invited the NMA to intervene in view of conflicting reports about Kanu’s health.

He made the disclosure while opposing an application by Kanu seeking to be transferred to the National Hospital, Abuja, for medical attention.

Awomolo asked the court to grant a week’s adjournment to enable the NMA panel to complete its assessment and submit a report. He also argued that Kanu’s complaints were not as serious as claimed by his lawyer, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN).

Justice James Omotosho stood down proceedings to write a ruling on whether Kanu should be taken to the National Hospital as requested in his application.
