The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT has handed over 20 bags of suspected cannabis sativa weighing 840 kilograms to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Lagos.

Speaking at the handover ceremony yesterday, Monday, October 6, at the naval base in Apapa, Capt. Idongesit Udoessien, Executive Officer of NNS BEECROFT, said the operation was part of the Navy’s ongoing efforts to combat illicit drug trafficking and strengthen maritime security in Lagos State.

He represented Commodore Paul Nimmyel, the Commander of NNS BEECROFT.

According to Udoessien, the seizure followed the interception of a van by the Base Quick Response Team, assisted by personnel from Operation MESA, in Ijegun last Thursday.

The suspects reportedly abandoned the vehicle and fled upon seeing the patrol team.

“The vehicle and the cannabis have been handed to the NDLEA for action,” he said.

The officer highlighted that the operation forms part of a broader strategy under the leadership of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Emmanuel Ogalla, to combat maritime crimes and enhance security along Nigeria’s waterways.

Udoessien reiterated the Navy’s commitment to supporting internal security operations and working closely with other security agencies to protect coastal communities.

He also promised intensified patrols and intelligence-led missions to prevent criminals from exploiting Lagos waterways and surrounding creeks.

“We commend the vigilance of our personnel and urge citizens to provide credible information to enhance security across Lagos State,” he added.
