The Nigerian military has activated Operation Ember Guard to strengthen security across the South West geopolitical zone, following intelligence reports indicating a potential rise in security threats during the festive and post-festive period.

The operation, which commenced on December 23, 2025, will run through January 15, 2026, and is aimed at maintaining peace, protecting lives and property, and ensuring the free movement of people and goods across the region.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, the Theatre Commander, Joint Task Force South West, Operation AWATSE, Rear Admiral Abubakar Mustapha, said the decision to activate Operation Ember Guard was based on actionable intelligence suggesting the likelihood of increased criminal and security-related activities within the zone.

Rear Admiral Mustapha explained that the operation aligns with the philosophy and strategic vision of the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, which prioritises proactive engagement, intelligence-led operations, and inter-agency collaboration to prevent threats before they escalate.
