Major Earthquake Hits Southern Japan, Dozens Feared Trapped

A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s southern Kyushu region on Tuesday, causing widespread destruction, toppling buildings, sparking fires and leaving dozens of people feared trapped in a partially collapsed shopping mall.

Authorities said rescue teams were searching the damaged mall, where several workers are believed to be trapped. Initial reports indicate at least one person has been killed, while more than 100 others sustained injuries.

The quake also damaged roads and bridges, disrupted electricity supply to thousands of homes, halted train services and forced the closure of Kumamoto Airport.

Tsunami warnings issued shortly after the earthquake were later lifted, while officials warned residents to remain alert for strong aftershocks.

Emergency responders and Japan’s Self-Defense Forces have been deployed to affected areas as rescue operations continue.

Authorities are still assessing the full extent of the damage.
