Kara–Berger Bridge Repairs To Disrupt Traffic On Lagos/Ibadan Expressway

Motorists using the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway have been advised to prepare for traffic delays as rehabilitation work begins on the outbound Lagos section of the Kara–Berger Bridge.

The traffic diversion plan, designed to allow the replacement of the bridge’s expansion joints while keeping vehicles moving, is expected to cause significant congestion, particularly between Berger and the Lagos city centre due to reduced road capacity.

According to an explanatory note issued by the Head of the State Taskforce on Road Construction and Rehabilitation, Ojerinde K.A., the existing four-lane carriageway will be temporarily reduced to two lanes over a 1.5-kilometre stretch to create a safe work zone.

Motorists have been urged to drive cautiously, obey traffic signs and follow the directives of traffic management officials throughout the construction period.

The advisory also noted that moderate traffic is expected around the Fatgbems Turn as some motorists make U-turns or seek alternative routes to avoid delays.

However, traffic heading towards Ibadan beyond the Fatgbems Turn is expected to flow freely with minimal disruption.

To shorten the duration of the project, CBC Construction Company will carry out construction activities round the clock, with floodlights and other lighting facilities installed to support night-time operations.

The Federal Ministry of Works, in collaboration with the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other stakeholders, appealed to motorists to cooperate with traffic officials, observe speed limits within the work zone and remain patient throughout the rehabilitation exercise.

The ministry said the temporary traffic measures are necessary to ensure the successful completion of the project and improve the long-term safety and durability of the Kara–Berger Bridge.
