Ikyoga Joka Biam, a notorious militia leader, has been shot dead during a violent clash in Zaki-Biam, Benue State.
Local sources said Biam was ambushed and killed by a rival armed faction.
The gun battle, which lasted several minutes, sent residents fleeing for safety.
Security operatives are yet to confirm the incident, but community leaders said tensions remain high in the area following the attack.
Biam was widely known for his involvement in violent conflicts in the region and had been linked to several communal crises in the past. Authorities are expected to increase security patrols to prevent reprisal attacks.
