Violence has rocked Belfast after a stabbing incident triggered overnight unrest, leaving burnt-out vehicles and damaged buildings across parts of the city.
A 30-year-old Sudanese refugee, Hadi Alodid, appeared before Belfast Magistrates’ Court charged with attempted murder, possession of a bladed article and threats to kill following Monday’s attack on a man in his 40s.
The victim reportedly lost an eye.
The court denied Alodid bail and adjourned the case until July 8.

The incident sparked widespread disorder late Tuesday, with masked protesters setting vehicles and buildings ablaze and forcing families, including infants, to flee their homes.
Chief Constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland, Jon Boutcher, said officers carried out multiple emergency evacuations, describing the situation as severe.
Residents expressed fear amid the unrest, with some questioning whether it was safe to send children to school.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the violence as “shocking and completely unacceptable,” warning that those responsible would face the full force of the law.

Authorities also blamed online misinformation and incitement for fuelling tensions, with criticism directed at high-profile figures including Elon Musk over social media activity linked to the unrest.
The violence follows rising tensions across the United Kingdom over immigration-related issues, with police urging calm and warning against sharing graphic footage of the attack.
Further protests were being planned as of Wednesday, raising concerns about continued instability in the region.
