The dispute between the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities over the payment of half-pay to university lecturers appears to be escalating into another strike.
Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu says the federal government will not be compelled to pay for work not done.
The minister was speaking at the end of this week’s federal executive council meeting chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The federal government is sticking to its gun and insisting the “no -work, no pay” policy it has adopted against members of the academic staff union of universities.
Government says there will be no salary for the university lecturers in the period In which they dis not work.
The federal government’s announcement comes amid a protest by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, who expressed their displeasure with the Federal Government’s invocation of the “no work, no pay” policy.
Following the weekly federal executive council meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, Minister of Education Adamu Adamu restated the government’s position while answering questions from state house journalists.
Adamu also denied that the federal government intended to casualise university employees.
The Federal Executive Council also approved more than five billion naira for printing of sensitive and non sensitive materials for the national examination council (NECO).
And another 3.2 billion naira was approved for the perimeter fencing of the Usman Danfodiyo University in Sokoto State.
Over two billion naira was approved by the council for the procurement of operational vehicles for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
The contracts for the automobiles were awarded to local automakers, according to Femi Adeshina, the president’s special assistant on media and public relations.
