The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to address its longstanding demands or face a nationwide strike that could once again disrupt academic activities in public universities.

In a statement titled “Notice of Strike Action” released on Monday in Abuja, ASUU President, Professor Christopher Piwuna, accused the government of deliberately ignoring critical issues affecting the future of public university education in Nigeria.

Professor Piwuna said the union had spent the last three months engaging the public and relevant stakeholders through the media to highlight unresolved matters but had received no meaningful response from the government.

Key issues raised by the union include:

  • Re-negotiation and full implementation of the 2009 ASUU–FGN Agreement

  • Adequate and sustainable funding for public universities

  • Revitalisation of university infrastructure and facilities

  • Alleged victimisation of union members at Lagos State University (LASU), Kogi State University (now Prince Abubakar Audu University), and the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO)

  • Unpaid salary arrears of 25% to 35%

  • Delays in the promotion of academic staff for over four years

  • Unremitted third-party deductions by the government

ASUU warned that the continued silence and inaction of the government could no longer be tolerated, stressing that failure to address these issues within the two-week deadline would trigger an indefinite strike.

“This is a final call. If the government fails to do the needful, we will have no choice but to withdraw our services nationwide,” the statement concluded.
