Alleged blasphemy: Police arraign two suspects in court

The Police in Sokoto has arraigned two suspects, Bilyaminu Aliyu and Aminu Hukunci before a Chief Magistrate Court over the unrest that led to the death of a student, Deborah Emmanuel.

The two suspects were students of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto and the deceased was also a co-student of the college alleged to have engaged on religious blasphemy.

In the First Information Report (FIR), Prosecuting Police Officer, Insp. Khalil Musa, told the Court that the suspects were accused of participating in disturbance act that led to the death of Deborah Emmanuel on May 12, this year.

Musa said investigation was in progress and the deceased corpse was deposited at Morgue of Usmanu Dandio Teaching Hospital Sokoto (UDUTHS).

When the charges were read, the accused men pleaded not guilty, while led Defense Counsel, Prof. Mansur Ibrahim, applied for bail on behalf of the accused person.

Ibrahim urged the court to grant the accused persons bail on liberal terms citing constitutional provisions and sections Administration of Criminal Justice Law.

Trial Judge (Name and Court location withheld for security reasons) reserved the ruling on bail application and ordered the accused to be remanded in Correctional custody.
