The Nigerian Railway Corporation has announced that the Abuja-Kaduna train services will reopen this week, following their temporary suspension after the tragic derailment that occurred on August 26, 2025.

The NRC announced this in a statement signed by its Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, which was made available to TVC. The statement stated that the Corporation has put efforts in place to ensure that the infrastructure is restored to meet the best safety standards in line with global practices.

The statement reads, “The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) is pleased to announce that the Abuja-Kaduna passenger train service is set to resume operations next week, following the successful completion of repair and safety checks on the affected section of track at Asham.

“The service was temporarily suspended after the unfortunate incident of August 26, 2025. Since then, the Corporation has worked tirelessly to ensure both the infrastructure and rolling stock are restored to the highest safety standards in line with global best practices.”

The corporation further disclosed that 512 passengers who were aboard the train during the heartbreaking derailment have already received refunds. Efforts are currently underway to ensure the remaining passengers are fully taken care of as well, stressing the importance of public safety, comfort and satisfaction.

“As part of our commitment to passenger welfare, the NRC has refunded 512 passengers out of the 583 on board the affected train. Efforts are ongoing to reach and process refunds for the remaining passengers to ensure that no one is left behind.

“The NRC appreciates the patience and understanding of our esteemed passengers and assures the general public that their safety, comfort, and satisfaction remain our top priority,” the statement concluded.

The agency acknowledges the support of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, security agencies, the media, and all stakeholders during this period of recovery.

The agency stated that it will communicate further details on the official resumption date and schedule in the coming days.

TVC previously reported that the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced major progress in its recovery and repair operations following the derailment of the Abuja–Kaduna train near Asham on 26 August 2025.

In a statement, the NRC said all coaches and locomotives involved in the incident had been successfully re-railed and moved to designated workshops for assessment and further technical work.
