The United States government has declared its support for democracy and not any political candidate ahead of Nigeria’s Presidential election on the 25th.
U.S Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Molly Phee said this in Lagos at a discourse on Youth participation in the democratic process.
In 14 days, Nigeria will head to the polls to elect her 5th president out of 18 candidates jostling to occupy the Aso Rock villa.
As practised in previous elections since 1999, the United States government has consistently shown its interest in Nigeria’s democratic process, supporting in the shadows and hoping the giant of Africa will once again prove to the world that it remains committed to upholding unwavering democratic system of governance.
This panel focused its discussion with Nigerian celebrities and officials of the U.S government on youth participation in Nigeria’s democratic process.
The youths make up the largest voting bloc in the election, according to statistics from INEC and they have promised to make their strength in numbers count.
With the countdown snowballing into days, Nigerians, especially the youths, can’t wait for another four years to make what they say is the right choice.
GROUP PRESENTS REPORT ON 2023 ELECTIONS, EXPECTS FREE, FAIR POLLS
A group known as The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa says it believes that a free and fair election is possible in Nigeria despite the challenges that may be pose a threat to its success.
The group said this at the media presentation of it’s latest report on Thursday.
With barely 3 weeks to Nigeria’s general election, members of the Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa are opening up conversations on the likely problems that can impede the success of the polls in the country.
It’s latest report titled : 2023 General Elections-Challenges and Threats to Consolidating Democracy was informed by recent developments in the political space and the concerns that continue to grow as elections approach.
Unveiling the report before newsmen, the group spoke to its content which captured major concerns raised by Nigerians.
Lingering fuel and cash scarcity, rising insecurity challenges in the polity, the spread of misinformation and fake news, likely manifestation of voter suppression and social unrest were some of these issues.
But inspite of the challenges highlighted, the report notes that there is hope that credible elections can be achieved.
CAPPA hopes that it’s recommendations to critical stakeholders are taken as the country counts down to the elections.
Former governor of Delta State, Emmanuel Uduaghan, has assured residents that the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Sheriff Oborevwori, will deliver dividends of democracy if elected next governor.
He gave the assurance at the palace of the Owhorode of Olomu Kingdom, Ovie Richard Ogbon, in Ughelli South Local Government Area during the visit of the PDP candidate to Delta Central Traditional Rulers.
Mr Uduaghan described the PDP governorship candidate as an honest, hardworking politician and public servant with astonishing track record especially as the longest serving Speaker of the State House of Assembly.
The former governor noted that Mr. Oborevwori’s pedigree as a Pan Delta has elevated above other candidates in the contest for the office of governor of Delta State.
On his part, the Delta PDP governorship candidate, Sheriff Oborevwori, assured the royal fathers that he would build on the gains of the incumbent governor and PDP Vice Presidential Candidate, Ifeanyi Okowa, if elected governor on the 11th of March 11, this year.
INEC TRAINS ELECTION OBSERVERS IN ENUGU
In preparation for the general election, accredited observers are trained with required skill and knowledge needed the polls.
This was the task extended to the accredited election observers in a two-day training held in Enugu state,
Elections are said to be free, fair and credible if all indices of election conduct, security, monitoring and observation are seamless.
Nigerian elections over the years have evolve, transiting from old election process, to the newly innovated, digital and real time exercise.
No doubt that this election, with the new 2022 electoral act, gives hope, that many feel will make the expected difference.
At this hall are experts from Action Aid, taking on these accredited observers on what is expected of them during election monitoring.
The participants selected from different fields of civil society organization, legal and academia are required to observe and send their report to appropriate quarters
The exercise is designed to bring inclusiveness, transparency and accountability to the electoral process, with the end product of generating report that will highlight the progress, challenges to engage the INEC and other electoral management bodies.
