The Lagos State Government has restated its commitment in ensuring the diligent prosecution in the murder of 22-year old Bamise Ayanwola.
This was contained in a statement released to the press by the Permanent Secretary and Solicitor-General of the Ministry of Justice, Titilola Shitta-Bey, to mark the first post-hummus birthday of the late fashion designer on November 30.
The trial is before Justice Sherifat Sonaike in which a Lagos BRT driver, Andrew Nice Ominikoron is the sole defendant.
Upon his arrest by the Police on the 7th of March, 2022, the government instituted a
five-count charge against him on March 22, 2022, which are Murder, Rape, Conspiracy to Commit a Felony and Sexual Assault.
According to Ms. Shitta-Bey, “In the proof of evidence, the State lined up nine (9) witnesses to testify. Trial commenced on the 9th of May, 2022 and from the time of arraignment till date, the case has come up eleven (11) times. The State has called seven (7) witnesses with thirteen (13) exhibits tendered. PW7 whose examination-in-chief was concluded on 31st day of October, 2022 is now being cross examined by defence counsel and the case stands adjourned till 5th of December, 2022 for continuation of trial.
She added that, The matter is being personally handled by the Honourable Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Moyosore Onigbanjo, supported by the Director of Public prosecutions, and a team of other lawyers from the office of the DPP.
The state government says, “Remarkable progress has been made in the matter and the State has demonstrated its readiness and determination to ensure the matter is prosecuted to its logical conclusion by ensuring that all its witnesses are available and ready to testify.
Andrew Nice Ominikokoron was arrested a few days after his disappearance after he was fingered as the prime suspect in the murder of the young fashion designer who had boarded a BRT Bus he was driving from Lekki axis of the State.
He has since been on trial for the murder of the young lady, her death had inflamed passion and anger among Lagos residents who had wondered how it could have happened.
